The short stories also explore friendships, teamwork and celebrate how we are all good at different things.Created to appeal to a wide range of learning styles, and learning needs including dyslexia and dyscalculia, the ‘Number Friends’ series uses familiar characters to explore early maths concepts.Message from the Author This book looks at ‘number bonds’ to ten, so is hosted by The Grand Old Duke, who represents the number ten. I designed a sports day themed story and each team of friends just so happens to be a number bond (so 3 and 7, or 4 and 6). With this book I wanted to bring in subtle social stories about teamwork, friendship and inclusivity. For example, the mice are unable to swim so make a paper boat for the swimming race instead of being left out. Each character is awarded a balloon by the Duke and I designed this illustration to mimic the ‘part-whole model’ often used in schools when learning about number bonds…About the Author Bridget Mather-Scott Bridget is a qualified Early Years teacher, and lives in Derbyshire with her family. She wants to help make maths more accessible to all children following a dyslexia diagnosis of her son. Her first book, ‘Number Friends’ looks at number formation and has been created for both parents and teachers to help support children’s learning.
